MEPs called on the Council to speed up the adoption of environmental laws

Members of the European Parliament, including such prominent European politicians as Viola von Cramon, Michael Gahler, Andrius Kubilius, appealed to the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada with a call to accelerate work on Ukraine's environmental legislation and adopt it during the spring session of the Ukrainian parliament.

This is stated in the letter of the deputies, which was handed over to Ukrinform.

"We, members of the European Parliament, close friends of Ukraine, express our support and solidarity with the large-scale reform program currently being implemented in the spring session of the Verkhovna Rada. Particularly useful are the draft laws falling under the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU. In this context, draft laws No. 4167 "On preventing, reducing and controlling pollution resulting from industrial activities", No. 3091 "On state environmental control" and No. 4461 "On Emerald Network territories" attract special attention," the letter says.

European politicians stressed that Ukraine is a key strategic partner of the EU in efforts to decarbonize the European economy by 2050 in accordance with the European Green Deal. The implementation of key environmental reforms is crucial for the development of such cooperation.

"The lack of progress in implementing key environmental legislation, especially that related to reducing industrial pollution, environmental control and biodiversity protection, can create regrettable obstacles to Ukraine's further integration into the EU," the document emphasizes.

MEPs expressed hope that the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine will use his mandate and powers to facilitate the legislative process and enable Verkhovna Rada deputies to vote on the mentioned legislative initiatives before the summer holidays.

As previously reported, Ukraine expressed solidarity with the European Green Deal and readiness to participate in innovative transformations to reduce harmful emissions and contribute to turning Europe into a climate-neutral continent by 2050.

Today, July 13, a High-Level Conference "Strategic Partnership between the European Union and Ukraine in the field of critical raw materials and batteries" was held in Ukraine, during which the parties signed a memorandum of understanding in the field of critical raw material supplies, which is necessary for the successful achievement of the EU Green Deal goals.
