How does industry in Ukraine affect the environment

The Minister of Environmental Protection spoke about global trends and ambitious plans of the Ukrainian authorities in the field of ecology

Global climate change may take first place among humanity's problems, displacing military conflicts, lack of drinking water and food. This was stated by Roman Abramovsky, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, during his speech at the "Ukraine 30. Ecology" forum, reports the correspondent of "Comments".

Global trends require modern industry to switch to "clean" production technologies, emphasized the Minister of Environmental Protection. In his opinion, it is necessary to stop discussions and unite in the fight against global climate change, in particular - in Ukraine.

"The agricultural sector produces a lot of emissions. This is almost 24% of total emissions. But this is not only about some threats and restrictions, it is also opportunities for the agricultural sector - efficient agricultural production," Abramovsky noted. According to him, climate change can be easily dealt with.

"You just need not to generate emissions from electricity production and electrify everything. That's it - the problem will be solved, but what a difficult path this is. Ukraine was one of the first to join and very quickly ratified the Paris Charter, began to implement it. But the first national significant contribution was not too ambitious," said the Minister of Environmental Protection of Ukraine.

Ukraine is working on a second contribution after signing the Paris Agreement, the official announced. He noted that the "color" of investments in the future will be "green" and it will be very difficult to develop production without modern environmental technologies.

"In 2018, our emission level was 39% of the 1990 level. Last year it was already slightly more than 37%. We are taking on the task of achieving the goal by 2030 - 35%," Abramovsky explained.

It should be recalled that during his speech at the "Ukraine 30. Ecology" forum, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke about plans to improve the environmental situation in the country and announced large eco-taxes for industrial enterprises.
