Restoring a safe environmental state of the city and region is the main goal of monitoring and developing an appropriate action plan
The results of the first stage of environmental monitoring in the city of Boryslav, Lviv region, were discussed by representatives of PJSC "Ukrnafta", Boryslav City Council and LLC "Lamor Ukraine", the general contractor for the work, a joint venture with Lamor Ab (Finland).
During the meeting at the residence of the Finnish Ambassador to Ukraine, the parties discussed the achievements of the first stage of comprehensive environmental monitoring, as well as various aspects of improving the conditions of man-made, social and environmental safety of the population of Boryslav.
In particular, the Ambassador of Finland to Ukraine, Päivi Laine, emphasized the importance of environmentally hazardous factors in Boryslav and the significant impact of this situation on the entire region.
In turn, the chairman of the board of "Ukrnafta" Oleg Gez and vice-president for social and environmental development Roman Iltyo told what efforts the company is making to improve the environmental situation in the region. In particular, the company is implementing a set of measures to eliminate gas contamination as a result of long-term oil and gas production in the city.
According to the head of the Boryslav City Council Ihor Yavorsky, today the state should not stand aside - it is necessary to pay attention to this unique situation. Accordingly, the approach must also be special.
Mika Pirneskoski, CEO of Lamor Corporation Ab, attended the meeting online and emphasized that from the very beginning of the project, representatives of both Lamor's head office and regional offices participated. This is a unique project for Ukraine, although Lamor specialists have repeatedly performed similar tasks in various countries around the world.
It was noted that the situation in the city is a consequence of natural and anthropogenic factors. In particular, we are talking about the geological structure and shallow occurrence of oil and gas-bearing layers with direct access to the surface, as well as long-term unregulated production in the past, back in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
In 2018, a decision was made to conduct comprehensive environmental monitoring, the result of which should be an action program to minimize phenomena dangerous to humans and the environment associated with the consequences of long-term oil production.
The first stage of environmental monitoring was carried out with the involvement of LLC "Lamor Ukraine" - a joint venture of Lamor Corporation Ab (Porvoo, Finland) and GC "LIGA" (Kyiv, Ukraine).
Thus, the basis for further work in this direction has been laid. An analysis of historical data and previous studies has already been carried out; the compliance of environmental indicators with national and international standards has been established; maps of pollution types and areas have been formed; various factors have been assessed, including oil production and, in the past, ozokerite mining.
To continue the project, support is needed both in Ukraine and abroad.
The next stage of the project will be the development of an action plan, the implementation of which will prevent further degradation of the environmental situation in the city with the gradual restoration of affected components of the region's ecosystem.
