Ukraine will face a shortage of drinking water in the next 30 years. Despite the fact that fresh water is a renewable resource, its reserves are decreasing at a catastrophic rate.
According to the press service of the State Environmental Inspectorate of Ukraine, the reduction of these reserves is due to river pollution and climate change.
According to the Hydrometeorological Service, the concentration of toxic compounds in Ukrainian rivers today is 30-40 times higher than the maximum permissible norms. Based on this, according to the forecast of the Institute of Water Problems and Land Reclamation, Ukraine will have to import drinking water by 2050.
"During 2020, the SEI drew up 3777 protocols on administrative offenses in the field of water resources, calculating 188 million hryvnias in damages," the report says.
According to the head of the State Environmental Inspectorate Andriy Malyovany, the protection of Ukraine's water resources should be a priority, while the State Environmental Inspectorate is working to increase control in this area.
The inspector said that his department intends to ask the authorities to strengthen legislation concerning the exploitation of water resources, as well as to organize constant monitoring of the state of fresh water in the country's reservoirs.
"We are talking about the lives of millions of people," Malyovany explained.
It is worth noting that against the background of global negative trends, Ukraine also creates its own problems related to river water.
As EADaily reported, the blocking of the North Crimean Canal in 2014 negatively affected the ecosystem of the Lower Dnieper. As a result, dangerous waterlogging and salinization of soils occur, and as a consequence - the destruction of many species of flora and fauna of the territories adjacent to the canal, the deterioration of the fertile soil layer and the quality indicators of the health of people living in this region.
