In Ukraine, you can complain about environmental pollution using SaveEcoBot

A function has been added to the SaveEcoBot environmental data chatbot that will help citizens correctly create and send a complaint about environmental pollution.

This was announced by Artem Romanyukiv, Development Director of NGO "SaveDnipro", during the presentation of the updated functionality at Ukrinform on February 17.

"The new SaveEcoBot functionality includes a number of clear steps that a person must go through to complain about one or more types of pollution," he emphasized.

Romanyukiv added that the chatbot can be used to complain about water, soil, and air pollution, waste, and even noise. A complaint can be filed with the State Environmental Inspectorate, the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, or local authorities. The chatbot will automatically generate the complaint in the appropriate form.

According to Ruslan Strilets, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources for Digital Development, Digital Transformations, and Digitalization, a large number of complaints about environmental violations were not considered because they were not properly formalized. "A very large number of complaints that came to the State Environmental Inspectorate, and those that are currently coming to the ministry, unfortunately, were not considered because they were not properly formalized. And this is indeed a problem," Strilets emphasized. He added that SaveEcoBot allows Ukrainians not to think about the form and correctness of filling out applications, as the bot automatically forms everything and sends it to the appropriate authority.

Pavlo Tkachenko, Head of IT at the NGO "SaveDnipro" and lead developer at SaveEcoBot, noted that to submit an application, you need to log in to one of the messengers, Viber or Telegram, find SaveEcoBot in it, and click the "Complain about pollution" button. After that, the chatbot will ask a few questions, and even if a person knows absolutely nothing about pollutants, the bot will still help and provide a complaint template. He added that SaveEcoBot uses open data from registers and online sets by geolocation to search for pollutants, which simplifies filling out the application.

As Ukrinform reported, in July 2018, a chatbot with environmental data, SaveEcoBot, started operating in Ukraine. The program allows real-time access to data on air pollution status by your geolocation, permits for pollution, planned works at polluting enterprises, polluting debtors, inspections at enterprises, and amounts paid for environmental damage.

As of February 15, 2021, 1.4 million residents from 15 countries have added the SaveEcoBot chatbot.
