Trees dumped in landfills pollute the environment
Disposal of holiday trees after the New Year is a huge problem for the ecology of Ukraine. Tatyana Tymochko, head of the All-Ukrainian Environmental League, spoke about this on the "Ukraine 24" TV channel.
"Not all purchased Christmas trees go through the disposal process; for the most part, a significant number of Christmas trees end up in landfills. In Kyiv last year, 14,000 were disposed of, while, according to approximate data, more than 500,000 Christmas trees were sold. Trees in landfills simply pollute the environment, then they are illegally burned, which is a terrible problem for Ukraine," the ecologist said.
Tymochko noted that Kyiv is trying to dispose of Christmas trees.
"Those Christmas trees that end up at collection points are shredded and used, which is a very important procedure. The chips from Christmas trees last a very long time; they are used to cover tree holes in the city that suffer from vehicle emissions. This largely protects plants, prevents drying out, and retains moisture," she explained.
However, according to Tymochko, such a system does not exist throughout Ukraine.
"There is a very large gap between the felling of millions of live trees and the minimal number of disposed ones, between those cut down and brought to cities and those purchased. In Kyiv last year, we registered more than 45,000 unsold trees. This greatly concerns environmentalists; we need to change our attitude towards the use of live trees," the ecologist stated.
