Over the past 25 years, about a hundred Ukrainian rivers have disappeared.

The main reason for the disappearance of rivers in Ukraine is their pollution

Over the past 25 years, about a hundred rivers have disappeared in Ukraine. The main reason for the lack of drinking water is the discharge of waste by enterprises. If this trend continues, Ukraine will face a severe shortage of drinking water by 2050, said Andriy Malyovany, head of the State Environmental Inspectorate.

According to him, about a hundred rivers have disappeared in Ukraine over the past 25 years. However, the reason is not only climate change, but also violations of environmental legislation – pollution, littering of rivers, irrational use of water resources.

As Malyovany explained in a comment to UNIAN, river pollution occurs, among other things, due to the fact that a large number of water outlets do not have a designated owner. In Kyiv alone, there are more than 3,000 km of such ownerless networks. This allows enterprises to discharge waste into the Dnieper without treatment. Industrial enterprises that do not have modern treatment equipment discharge waste containing mercury, iron, and even radioactive particles into rivers.

Illegal agricultural activities also lead to waste entering groundwater. These are residues of fertilizers, chemicals, and other things, which also leads to wastewater pollution, explained the head of the State Environmental Inspectorate. He also explained that plastic is washed into the water from unauthorized landfills, which also leads to river pollution.

Because of this, according to Malyovany, by 2050, Ukraine may face a severe problem of clean water shortage.
