Only a few enterprises in Ukraine are significantly reducing harmful emissions.

Existing plans to reduce harmful emissions by industrial enterprises in Ukraine are constantly being postponed, including due to lack of funding. Only individual enterprises significantly reduce harmful emissions.

This was stated in an interview with "Focus" by Roman Abramovsky, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources.

"We have an approved emission reduction plan, which, unfortunately, is not being implemented. It has already been postponed once, and now there are new initiatives to postpone it for another five years. The Ministry is categorically against postponements. This plan is agreed with the European Energy Community. It concerns emissions of fine particulate matter PM2.5 and PM10, and carcinogenic sulfur and nitrogen oxides. Yes, it requires a lot of money, and the electricity market is not in the best condition right now, but we will insist. We are responsible for people's lives and health, if there is no reduction in emissions, it will be difficult to guarantee a good and long life," the minister emphasized.

He reported that real improvement in the situation was achieved only with individual enterprises.

For example, in Kyiv, at the Darnytsia TPP, we solved the issue of emissions – they are building filters, will install them by the end of the year, and some emissions, in particular, fine particulate matter, will be reduced. If they do not comply, we will stop the TPP, fine them, and demand compensation for damages. This is the competence of the Environmental Inspectorate,

– Abramovsky stated.

Also, according to him, significant achievements in reducing harmful emissions were demonstrated by the Illich Iron and Steel Works in Mariupol, owned by Metinvest Group. Sensors were installed at the enterprise, which record a constant decrease in harmful emissions. The complex of measures to improve the environmental friendliness of production allowed to reduce fine particulate matter emissions into the air by more than 10 times.

However, industrial emissions, according to the minister, are not the only source of atmospheric pollution.

"In addition to stationary emission sources, transport is a big problem in Kyiv. The capital has a very inconvenient transport organization, constant traffic jams, and public transport that is far from perfect. I am very annoyed that Kyiv has again purchased diesel buses, I consider this not the best solution for the 21st century. I understand that buying electric buses is expensive, and the system needs to be rebuilt for this, charging stations need to be made. But you have to start somewhere. In Zaporizhzhia, Zhytomyr, they thought about electric transport, and in Kyiv, they buy 200 diesels from Belarus. This decision is incomprehensible to me," Abramovsky said.

Earlier it was reported that Minister Abramovsky spoke about the ministry's plans for the Chornobyl zone. The Ministry is thinking about expanding the tourist potential of the abandoned city and states: people will never live there.
