161 pollutants were found in the waters of the Dnieper - the river was on the verge of an ecological catastrophe. This was reported by the press service of the Accounting Chamber.
Pollutants such as the herbicide atrazine, metals cadmium and nickel were found in surface waters. According to environmentalists, these pollutants threaten the health of the Ukrainian population and can lead to an ecological catastrophe.
Recent studies have also revealed serious excesses of synthetic substances in the water. This refers to agricultural pesticides, pharmaceuticals, synthetic musk (used in perfumery) and heavy metals (zinc, copper, mercury).
Fish are also dying en masse in the Dnieper. Environmentalists attribute the mass death to the blooming and shallowing of the river.
The study was conducted as part of an audit of the effectiveness of the water management development program and environmental rehabilitation of the Dnieper for the period up to 2021.
The Accounting Chamber stated that if the ecological situation in the Dnieper does not improve, the water will continue to be polluted. Then there will be a need for complete purification of the river basin. Costs can exceed the planned budget by more than 2000 times. The Accounting Chamber also stated that only UAH 4.2 million was allocated from the budget for the rehabilitation of the Dnieper water in four years.
